The CDP Corporate Supply Chain Programme, initiated in 2007, represents an integral aspect of the Carbon Disclosure Project’s drive to promote management of greenhouse gases within industry. Building on the annual CDP Information Request, it effectively leverages CDP’s unique position as the world’s largest resource of corporate greenhouse gas emissions data. CDP’s 2008 Information Request, compiled and issued on behalf of Signatory Investors, attracted responses from more than 1,550 corporations, while CDP’s website is the largest climate change related corporate database in the world.
The creation of the Corporate Supply Chain Programme widens CDP’s focus to encompass the emissions resulting from a company’s supply chain and the risks and opportunities in relation to climate change. In many sectors such as retail, ICT (Information Communications & Technology) and FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) supply chain emissions from activities such as processing, packaging and transportation often exceed those arising from an individual purchasing company’s own operations.
CDP’s Supply Chain Programme is designed to assist companies in their efforts to anticipate and manage new pressures from climate change which are not directly within their organisational control.
In many instances the questions raised by procurement organisations have served to engage suppliers in the business implications of climate change related issues for the first time. Some suppliers have already identified areas where emissions cuts can be made and there is also evidence of suppliers placing greater emphasis on energy efficiency as concern mounts over the impact of rising energy prices on production costs. Management is well aware that energy efficiency finds swift reflection in the bottom line.
CDP conducted a pilot with Cadbury, Dell, HP, Imperial Tobacco, L'Oréal, Nestle, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, Prudential, Reckitt Benckiser, Tesco and Unilever. Other Blue Chips, all of which work with supply chains that span various sectors and countries, followed suit and key participants include Acer, Banco Bradesco, Boeing, BT Group, Carrefour, Celesc, Colgate Palmolive, Exelon, Fiji Water, Heinz, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Johnson Controls, Juniper Networks, Kellogg’s, Merrill Lynch & Co., National Grid, Newmont Mining, Royal Mail, SSL International, Vale and Vodafone Group.
